Reviews
The Mountaineers Books have reissued this lovely book about Mt. Rainier along with two others ( North Cascades and Sierra Mountains). Good for them. This book is a sweet valentine to Mt. Rainier with stunning photos and personal and insightful writing. James Martin (photographer) and John Harlin III (writer) team up to offer as they say in the title "notes and images from our iconic mountain." Those of us lucky to live within sight of ths gem in the Earth's crown realize how much The Mountain (as it is know to locals) dominates and permeates it surroundings. Instead of trying to cover the entire mountain the team provides photos and essays on Liberty Ridge (a very technical and dangerous climbing route), the Wonderland Trail (the amazing hiking trail circling the Mountain), and a profile of Mike Gauthier (the lead climbing ranger). I am a great Rainier fan having visited it often and read a fair amount on the subject. This book is a worthy addition to the Rainier ouevre. The photos and text complement each other and offer a warm and glowing tribute to The Mountain's awesomeness.
